James Ward Packard had been very disappointed with the Winton car that he had purchased. Winton said that if Packard thought he could make a better car he should and so with the help of two former Winton workers the first Packard was built in 1899.
During World War II the Packard Motor Car Company sold the dies for both the Junior and Senior Packards to the USSR. The Packard would live on in the form of the ZIS. Therefore all Packards from 1946 wered basically Clippers.

The 1958 Packard Hawk was the last throw of the die to keep the company from annihilation. Sadly only 588 models came off the production line before the company folded. Packard's by this time were Packard's in name only. In 1957 Packard production had moved to Studebaker's factory in South Bend, Indiana. Similar to the Studebaker 1957 Golden Hawk, the Packard Hawk used fiberglass hoods. Its supercharged engine meant that the Hawk was the fastest production Packard in the company's history. About 100 remain on the roads today.
